Unwrapping Shoalhaven – Breakfast and beach combo

We woke up in our cosy wood-fire heated cottage and took some time to soak in the view of Pigeon House Mountain in the distance. The sun had risen and its crepuscular rays streamed through the gaps in the clouds—it was refreshing.

While we could have cooked up breakfast in our fully-equipped kitchen, we decided to eat out and found an amazing restaurant named Milk Haus a few minutes car-ride away. Occupying an old cheese factory built in 1901, Milk Haus is a wholefoods café which prides in providing meals that are honest and free from toxins and anything artificial.

A wood-fire danced and crackled in the corner. Yellow coloured seating mixed with long timber communal tables filled the small yet contemporary decorated space. A garden at the back of the café provides most of the ingredients that go into their delicious breakfast and lunch dishes. The garden produces a myriad of fruits and vegetables ranging from leek to cauliflower and tomatoes to fennel.

We scanned the menu and made a swift decision. Joseph had the kimchi scramble with shallots, pickled daikon, mustard greens on spelt and a side of preservative free bacon. I had the broad bean, white bean, minted pea and avocado smash with lemon verbena, leafy greens and dukkah on toasted sourdough with a side of garlic mushrooms.

To be honest, it was the best meal we had had on the entire trip. Because it was wholesome and felt of good old home cooking at its best! Every bite was delightfully flavoursome. We wished we had more time to be able to return for lunch at this wonderful restaurant,  but alas the road beckoned.

We jumped into our yellow ride and headed straight for Narrawallee Beach to take one last look at the breath-taking sea views of the South Coast. The green moss and algae on the 250 million-year-old sedimentary rocks at Narrawallee are a sight to see with the colours popping from a distance.

The cloud capped skies and cool refreshing breeze made for a lovely walk along the soft sand—with full tummies and happy hearts, we took one last look at the wonderful expanse and bid farewell. Unwrapping Shoalhaven has been a lovely journey and we look forward to returning to her bountiful region soon.

OMG… kimchi scramble with shallots, pickled daikon, mustard greens on spelt and a side of preservative free bacon. What a flippin TASTE EXPLOSION. I honestly dont know I would have ordered this tho, the daikon would have thrown me. But the bean, minted pea and avocado smash with lemon verbena, leafy greens and dukkah on toasted sourdough with a side of garlic mushrooms sounds riiiiiiiiight up my alley. I do miss having access to so many incredible foodie places living in a remote part of Australia. Fantastic to see Shoalhaven through your eyes. If I can ever afford to visit down south, I am visiting the area. 🙂
