Whale Watching in Huskisson, Jervis Bay

The wind was in my hair and I could taste the saltiness in the air. There was clear blue waters as far as the eye can see. I was happy. It was our first road trip from Canberra and we were glad that we chose this piece of paradise for a short getaway.

We were in Jervis Bay, home to migrating whales between May to November. I had bought our tickets in advance and was excited to cruise the bay with Dolphin Watch Cruises Jervis Bay.

The day we drove into Huskisson, a beautiful little town that sits on the shores of Jervis Bay, the sun was shining brightly. The whale counting board outside the cruise office that lists the number of sightings for the day had a large number listed and I was excited! I was hoping we would see these majestic mammals in their element the next day too.

Unfortunately for us, at 12.30pm the next afternoon, mother nature decided it was time for a storm. The sea was rough and the skies grey, not your ideal  situation for whale watching. Our skipper was amazing, he tried getting through the rough waters to see a mother and calf that was reported leaving the bay but alas, we only saw a little bit of her for a split second before the large waves engulfed our vision.

With the safety of everyone on board in mind, we had to turn around. I must admit, I was sad, I was  a little angry about the weather but the experience of braving the rough waters that felt like a roller coaster ride from time to time was fun too! You need to always find that silver lining… as Joseph always says.

I wrote to the cruise company about the day we had and to my delight they have invited us back! This is what we’re hoping to see when we head back for whale watching in Huskisson… wish us luck!
