An Instagram Food Tour of Malaysia

OysterEgg-RJohn

This trip back home to Malaysia has been about food and only food. I have been on a mission to eat as many dishes as I can and document it. Malaysia, my home country is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds making it an amazing destination to satisfy a curious palate. Cuisines vary from Chinese to Indian, Malay to Nyonya, Eurasian to East Malaysian, the list goes on. I can’t try them all so here are a few that I have tried and can vouch for. You will find the addresses below each photo.

Along the way of documenting all the glorious food I have tasted, my friends on Facebook (Barry, Alex, Teik Hong and Nishal) decided to suggest places for me to try, vouching for their wholesome goodness. I have yet to get to them, but I figured its best I list them and share these delicious stalls/restaurants with you too!

Dish: Wantan Mee – Egg noodles tossed in a sauce, topped with Char Siu (BBQ pork) or shredded chicken, wontons (in soup), choy sum and served with pickled green chillies on the side. The chillies aren’t very spicy so give them a try!

Where: Lim’s Chicken Rice Shop on 88 Jalan ss14/1 Subang Jaya, Selangor

Barry’s and Nishal’s Suggestion: Hai Keng Restaurant, 24, Jalan 14/20, Seksyen 14 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Dish: Masala Thosai – Thosai is a fermented crepe or pancake made from rice batter and black lentils that is cooked on a flate round pan called a tawa. When it is stuffed with spiced potato it’s called Masala Thosai. It’s best eaten on a banana leaf. Don’t foget the Ginger Tea to wash it down!

Where: Khuntai Restaurant at Jalan 5/44, Bukit Gasing, 46000 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Dish: Roti Bom – This flaky flat bread made from fine wheat flour is layered with sugar and planta on the inside. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, try their plain version called Roti Kosong, it is served with dhal. sambal and fish curry on the side.
